Intro by the artist s.myselle:
I've been keeping a close eye on the AI technology scene since 2020, and I've been fascinated by the global conversation that surrounds this rapidly moving field. I remember back in the late 90s, when electronic music was just starting to gain popularity, I was initially resistant to it, thinking that 'real' music could only be created with traditional instruments. But as I became more and more involved in the electronic music scene, I began to see the immense potential of this new form of music and the spine-tingling moments it could create, bringing back a mixture of emotion and nostalgia for my teenage years.
Now, in the present day, we're facing a similar moment with AI technology. While we're excited about its potential, there's also a warning sense of unease, a kind of goosebump-inducing feeling that we're on the edge of something both revolutionary and unfamiliar. Are we really replacing ourselves with AI? Could our involvement in designing and training AI be the key to unlocking its full potential? Or is this all part of a larger, inevitable shift towards a future where AI-generated music is the norm, and our initial concerns will fade into a fading memory?
But amongst all the uncertainty and speculation, there are moments that remind us of the true magic of music. To see a musician on stage, completely consumed by their art, performing with passion and skill is a sight to be witnessed. It's a form of magic that I hope will never be lost, even in a future where AI plays a larger role in music production. It's a reminder of the importance of preserving the human element in our creative process, even as we play with new technologies and techniques.
This curiosity and fascination with the possibilities of AI is what drove me to try this experiment in the first place. I'm passionate about testing the boundaries of what's possible with AI and seeing if it's all just smoke and mirrors or if there's real potential. The results of this experiment left me quite stunned, as the tracks were not as bad as I thought. Each track showed just how far AI technology has come in creating interesting music. And to think that all of these tracks, with the exception of Elon Musk's, were created in July 2023! It's really mind-blowing to see how quickly this technology is developing and what it might be capable of in the future.
We have to talk about it. So watch and listen and come back with your comments.
Art Meets Tech: Exploring Emotions with AI-Generated Music In this video-series, I give in into a captivating art project that explores the interplay of technology, art, and emotion.
This project, which took place in July 2023, centered around a simple yet powerful question: can AI-generated music stir genuine emotions in its listeners?
To answer this question, I put Mubert, an innovative AI music generator, to the ultimate test, generated an image with Midjourney and do Kaiber the visual expression.
AI vs. Human Emotion: The Musical Showdown
For centuries, music has been an integral part of human expression, capable of stirring up a wide range of emotions.
Whether it's the euphoria of a dance track, the melancholy of a sad ballad, or the nostalgia of an old classic, music has always held a special place in our hearts.
But as AI technology advances, a question emerges: can machines replicate the same emotional power that human musicians possess?
Tech's Musical Journey: From Skepticism to Innovation
The evolution of technology and its impact on music production has been a constant source of debate and skepticism.
Even in the early days of recorded music, traditionalists expressed concerns that the use of recording equipment and sound editing would erode the raw authenticity of music.
As technology advanced and synthesizers and drum machines became commonplace in music production, there was a sense among some that technology was replacing the organic, human element of music-making.
Harmony Unleashed: The Evolution of Music Tech Despite initial concerns, history has shown us time and time again that technological innovation in music production has been a force for good, serving as a catalyst for new forms of creative expression and enabling musicians to push the boundaries of what's possible.
The electric guitar, synthesizers, and even auto-tuning were initially met with skepticism, but they have since become integral parts of the modern musician's toolkit, enabling artists to create sounds and effects that would have been unthinkable just a few decades ago. When AI and Humans Collide: A Musical Fusion Fast forward to 2023, where we witnessed the collaboration between human and AI in the art of music.
This unique fusion challenges us to rethink the role of AI in art, asking fundamental questions about our perception and imagination. Beyond Bias: Unearthing the Heart of AI-Generated Music As we explore this project, we're left to ponder these questions:
Is our emotional response to AI-generated music simply a reflection of our own biases and preconceptions, or is there something deeper at work?
Could AI have the capacity to create music that resonates with us on a deeper level, just as human composers do?
Or is our response to AI-generated music more a result of our willingness to believe in the power of technology, rather than a true reflection of its artistic merit? The Future of Creativity: AI's Role in Artistic Expression Join me on this journey as I explore the transformative power of technology in the world of music and art, all while pondering the question:
What does the future hold for AI and human creativity?
